Coronavirus in Sports 3/11

The NCAA has prohibited fans from coming to March Madness games.

There will be no fans in March Madness. The world has gone crazy, and we’ve just gotten a little crazier. Only essential family and important people will be allowed to attend. Tickets will be refunded. An official statement was:

“The NCAA continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 in consultation with public health officials and our COVID-19 advisory panel. Based on their advice and my discussions with the NCAA Board of Governors, I have made the decision to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division 1 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance. While I understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our sports, my decision is based on the current understanding of how COVID-19 is progressing in the United States. This decision is in the best interest of public health, including that of coaches, administrators, fans, and most importantly, our student-athletes. We recognize the opportunity to compete in an NCAA national championship is the experience of a lifetime for the students and their families. Today, we will move forward and conduct championships consistent with the current information and will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed.”

MLB To Move Giants and Mariners Games

Although it isn’t official, it should be. The MLB is considering moving Mariners and Giants games to another city not affected by the Coronavirus. COVID-19 has killed over 20 people in both of those regions. Washington governor Jay Inslee banned public gatherings of over 250 people. The MLB has limited media access along with the NBA and NHL.

NBA Cancels Jazz vs Thunder

In a move that was largely foretasted, the NBA has “postponed” the Jazz vs Thunder game. The problem was this was that the game was getting ready to start. And then the players went back to the locker room, while officials spoke with NBA advisers. 30 minutes later, the game is postponed. Whether this has something to do with the Coronavirus is not even question. Of course it does. Two players were going to be scratched because they are sick.
